During the month of April, PSRI will be conducting 2 “mini” workshops! These short, hands on sessions are meant to introduce you to new things in an informal, instructor lead, hands on approach!
For the first workshop, Mike Dooley will be conducting an Introduction to Off Camera Flash Photography on Saturday, April 20 from 12-4 PM at Lakewood Baptist Church. During this 4 hour class, we are going to cover the basic concepts of Off Camera flash photography.
This will NOT be a presentation, but rather a hands on demonstration with ongoing questions and answers. My approach to learning is a see and do it philosophy.
We will start with the options for taking the flash off camera, as well as the different equipment needed to control, mount and modify your small flashes. Proprietary optical control, remote flash cables, and radio triggers will be all be discussed. Light stands, umbrella swivels and clamps. We will explore modifiers such as umbrellas, softboxes, grids, flags, snoots, reflectors and gels. We will play around with simple lighting setups so that you can see the difference between hard light and soft light, as well as distance and light size.
Class will be limited to 10 members at a cost of $15 per member for the session. The first 10 people to sign up for the class will get a slot. If there are enough people interested we can explore the possibility of holding a second session at a later date.

April 27th join PSRI for a 3 hour workshop on portrait photography with John Pitocco of John Pitocco Photography. The class will run from noon to 3 PM, and will be conducted at Roger Williams Park. This 3 hour session is intended to help you to improve your outdoor natural light portrait skills with an emphasis on using the environment. We will explore such topics as finding locations with interesting backgrounds, placement of subjects with relation to the sun, using reflectors and scrims to augment the light, as well as posing and subject interaction. Three models will be on hand to help you experiment with the lessons that you are learning.
Class will be limited to 10 members at a cost of $30 per member for the session. In the event that the workshop needs to be canceled due to inclement weather, a rain date will be selected. The first 10 people to sign up for the class will get a slot. If there are enough people interested we can explore the possibility of holding a second session at a later date.

Hi Sue! You do not need anything more then just a camera for both workshops.
For the lighting class I will introduce what the different pieces of lighting gear are, what they do, and show you some ways you might use them.
For the portrait workshop, we will be using mostly natural light, but you are more then welcome to bring a flash, but it is not necessary.
