Gallery Visit

This Sunday I will be giving a private tour of my photography exhibit, Touching The History: Photographs From The Dome Of Hagia Sophia, between 4:00 – 5:00 PM. If you like to be there, just drive to the Eaton Street gate of Providence College and tell the guard you are visiting the Hunt-Cavanagh Art Gallery with me. If the Eaton Street gate is closed, you will have to go through the Huxley Avenue gate and come down to Hunt-Cavanagh. I will be there a little before 4:00 and stay until 5:00 PM.

You are welcome to bring family and friends.

Exhibit Opening

I would like to thank my friends from PSRI for visiting the opening reception of my exhibit, “Touching the History” at Hunt-Cavanagh Art Gallery of Providence College, and add special thanks to Ted Haley and Dennis Goulet for taking photographs and video footage at the reception. I will share their work soon. Again, thank you all who had the time to attend. If there is interest from a number of members, I can open the gallery on a weekend for a private viewing. Let me know.

The Art of Polaroid at Gallery 4

Paul CaponigroPolaroid was (it’s a shame I even refer to the name in the past tense) one of the leading innovators in the photography field. Although most people may associate the name with its trademark instant photography that yielded millions of family snapshots and passport photographs, the company also produced extraordinary materials and equipment used by many major photographers; Ansel Adams, Paul Caponigro, Irving Penn pop in my mind in this context. Recently, a very large and rich Polaroid Collection of photographs have been auctioned by Sotheby’s with many examples of this medium as well as those that Polaroid Corporation collected for the sake of photographic art.

Gallery 4 at Tiverton Four Corners has an exhibit “The Art of Polaroid” featuring a collection of Polaroid photographs. The show will be on display July 31-September 6, 2010 at Gallery 4. Hours are Monday – Saturday 10 AM – 5 PM, Sunday 11 AM – 5 PM.

Richard Avedon at Boston MFA

Richard Avedon’s name has been inextricably tied to fashion photography for many decades. His iconic images of celebrities, ordinary people, towns, villages, objects have been shown in magazines, books, posters, billboards, and many exhibitions.

Now, we get a chance to see his work up close at the Museum Of Fine Arts in Boston. The exhibit, “Avedon Fashion 1944-2000″ will be on display between August 10, 2010 – January 17, 2011 in the Foster Gallery. This is a rare opportunity to see his work, his original photographs at touching distance. It should be an exciting exhibit.

PSRI Magazine is Out

PSReye Magazine Cover

PSReye Magazine Cover

The PSReye Focus magazine, featuring the photographs and articles of PSRI members and Providence College photography students is available for purchase. It is the result of the hard work of two Providence College students, Emma Hansen and John Vaghi with contributions from many photographers and the keen and critical eye of the editorial board of the magazine. It is published on an on-demand printing platform and anyone can purchase as many copies as they want. The photographic contributions are great so is the print and paper quality. It should make an excellent Christmas gift or stocking stuffer for the photo buff and art lovers.

Order it directly from MagCloud. The holiday price until January 1, 2010 is $12.50 plus shipping. After that the price will go up to $15.00 plus shipping. Shipping charges depend on the delivery speed, the lowest cost option at $1.40 per magazine arrives within about one week. MagCloud accepts PayPal or credit card payments and you will receive your copy in your mailbox within about one week although they indicate 1-2 weeks.

We hope that you enjoy the magazine, which is most likely a camera club first.

Photography Exhibit at Newport Art Museum

Through Four Pairs of Eyes

The Newport Arts Museum presents “Focus on Four,” an exhibit of four American photographers who worked in Rhode Island at different times between 1899 and the 1970s. The show highlights the photographers’ varying approaches to the medium. During the summers of 1899 and 1903, Gertrude Käsebier (1852-1934) spent the season in a rural part of Newport. Her photographs contributed to her recognition as the most important woman of the pictorialist movement. Lewis Hine (1874-1940) worked in Rhode Island briefly in 1909 and in 1912 with the National Child Labor Committee and the Consumers’ League of Rhode Island. He photographed child labor as well as the conditions in New England textile mills. Charlotte Estey’s three-part series for the Providence Journal’s Rhode Islander about the South Main Street community offers a window into the Providence of 1952. Aaron Siskind, an abstract photographer, came to Rhode Island School of Design in 1971 and secured his position as one of the 20th-century’s most influential photographers.
LOCATION: Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Ave., Newport. Friday, Oct. 30, 5 to 7 p.m. reception. Show continues through Janurary 18. $10 nonmembers; free for members; to register for the reception, call (401) 848-8200, ext. 109.
