We’ve been feeding the birds year round at my house for over 30 years and have a wide variety of birds that are regular visitors. Although not one of birds we regularly see, this year we had bluebirds visiting our feeders for the last four weeks and at times as many as four pairs were at the feeders. The birds visit early and late in the day, and on very cold days stay much of the day. After a couple of days I set up two light stands with branches attached to provide perches in convenient locations.
I photographed the birds through the windows in the kitchen and lavette. All the photographs in this post are captured with a handheld Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III camera body with the Olympus M.Zuiko 300mm f/4 PRO lens, mostly at f/4 and shutter speeds as slow as 1/15 second. I photographed through the double pane window glass, although it did take some experimentation to discover which window sections offered good results.
To learn more about the birds that visit my backyard and how I photograph them using the house as a blind, see my latest post on photographing Birds in the Backyard.
