At last nights meeting I talked a little bit about a few surveys that we currently have going on at the club. The first was about the Spring time mentoring class, and the second was about a PSRI Day that we are looking to put together. Please take a quick read, and if interesting in either event please complete the survey by Sunday night, March 3rd.
During the fall, PSRI held a 6 week long mentoring class that that covered some basic photography skills. The class ran for one hour a night, and was conducted prior to our weekly Tuesday night meeting. We are discussing the idea of conducting a similar program this spring, but wanted to get the memberships feedback on what the class content. The cost of the program would be determined after we came up with a course outline, but will likely fall in the $5-10 a week range. The second event is what I am calling it “PSRI Mentoring Day”, and it is the brain child of Mentoring Chairperson Marion Faria. The idea is to have a day where we can match up mentors with students for a day of hands on teaching in a one on one environment We will attempt to match people with similar equipment and photographic interest. Note that this is NOT a field trip. We will choose a location (perhaps a park) that offers a wide variety of photographic opportunities such as birds & ducks, landscape, a place to take portraits. The location itself does not matter, as this day is all about working with a mentor to ask questions and simply learn. Most folks can read about a technique, but there is nothing quite like getting out into the field and actively working with an expert that can answer your questions in an open learning environment!
The subject of learning could be virtually anything. For example, a mentor and a student might pair up to work on landscape photography – going through the technical steps of hyper focal distance focusing and composition. Another mentor/student pair might work on learning all about manual exposure and how the histogram and the blinkies can help determine exposure.
We believe that most people are going to learn best by doing, and that one on one hands on sessions are going to allow you to get the most possible benefit from your time. Our goal is to try to keep this as much one on one as possible, so we are looking for as many folks as possible to volunteer their time and knowledge!
While we do not have any one specific date planned at this time, we are hoping that we can start getting all of the information collected to start matching people up. The number of responses we get will help us to decide when and where we could pull this off.
