Unlike the typical photographic tour, this brand new workshop is designed for those starting out in photography and with a desire to learn to use their equipment in new and exciting ways to capture the essence of the rainforest.  You’ll return home with a colorful portfolio of tropical nature images and an expanded photographic toolbox so you can create dynamic images at home and in your future travels.

Photography is about light, and light in the tropical environment can be challenging, so our first full day will be short classroom sessions to refresh our knowledge of camera operation and metering, exposure, fill flash, depth of field and selective focus.  We’ll follow each session with time in the 10+ acres of garden at our arrival hotel where we will practice these skills to prepare you for your time in the rainforest.  We’ll tailor the learning segments to the needs of the participants, and with two instructors we’ll be able to accommodate any skill level.

Our first destination is the lowland rainforest along the Sarapiqui River where we will spend three days photographing in the lush vegetation of the forest.  This lodge was selected for its abundance of poison dart frogs, tree frogs, lizards and the colorful birds that take advantage of strategically placed bird feeders.  We’ve also scheduled a private boat trip along the river to photograph the wildlife that frequent the water’s edge.

Next we’ll travel high into the Atlantic slope cloud forest (4,500 feet) to a lodge located in one of the most bio-diverse areas of Costa Rica.  Here we will photograph rushing mountain streams, lush vegetation, birds, and mammals.  We’ll practice our macro techniques on the plentiful orchids and even venture out one evening to see what we may find to photograph by flashlight.  You’ll also have an opportunity to use high speed flash set ups to photograph hummingbirds in flight.

Photographers and instructors Greg Basco and Dennis Goulet will ensure you come home with a diverse collection of rainforest imagery.

I have received the following information from the Workshop Coordinator for American Photo Magazine. It sounds like a very promising event, all day long, 15 models, 10 stations, all the photos you can take with instructions. Read about the deep discount in members only page for this workshop.

On October 1st we will be in Boston MA, hosting the American Photo Model Shoot Series. I would like to extend a deep discount to you and your club for those who want to join us. We don’t want anything in return, we are just going to 10 cities across the country and are teaching from the beginner to expert photographers how to take better model photographs in one day. I have just made arrangements for another 5 day photography workshop in the Smoky Mountains and Cades Cove in Tennessee. The workshop is oriented to landscapes, wildflowers and wildlife – limited to 10 participants. The weather conditions in 2010 and the 2010 – 2011 winter indicate a spectacular photo opportunity. The Greater Lynn Photo Assoc. would like to invite you all to join us at GLPA headquarters (564 Boston St. Lynn, Ma 01905) on Saturday Jan. 29th from 10 am to 3 pm for a day of indoor photo opportunities similar to those available at the NECCC Conference and past Yankee seminars.

Winter may be upon us but that doesn’t mean you should put away your camera. A big hit at NECCC this summer was a high-speed flash setup designed by Roy Marshall, MNEC. Roy will be there with his one of a kind paint and water drop set-ups. We  will also have various setups featuring still life, flower impressions, glassware, black light and a few surprises—some dog models and a child model. Try out those new holiday presents and your creative juices while trying this kind of photography.

Have you missed out on these at NECCC because you were attending seminars or working on other committees? Here is your chance to try them at GLPA. Keep in mind that some of the setups require a tripod.

This photo opportunity is open to members and visitors. Cost is $10 for GLPA members or $15 for non-GLPA members. Come for an hour or stay all day. Doors will be open at 9:45 am. We will run through lunch but there are sub shops and restaurants in the area available for your lunch break.
