Received the following announcement from Jessica Wilson. A visit to the photographer’s website will show you the promise of a full print exhibit. Looks very interesting, well worth the effort the drive to see the exhibit.

A Photograph from The Exhibit

Photographer Mark Starr of (see his web site) will show photos of the Point Judith Fishing Community atthe South Kingstown Public Library/Peace Dale, 1057 Kingstown Rd., Peace Dale RI 02879 on Thursday, May 14, at 7 PM.

For more information: 789-1555
For directions: www.skpl.org

Mark Starr received a B.A. from Wesleyan University, in Middletown, Ct. He exhibits work and has won numerous prizes at the Mystic Arts Center, the Slater Memorial Museum and the Norwich Center for the Arts, and a portfolio of his work has appeared in the fine-art black and white magazine Lenswork. He is a selected artist at the Mystic Arts Center, as well as a member of the Artist’s Cooperative Gallery and the American Child Photographers Charity Guild.

He says of this presentation:

Having spent years in a museum environment documenting the area’s rich whaling and fishing history, I soon realized how important it was to record this industry before it, too, disappears. Over the past year I have had the privilege of accompanying many of the vessels on their journeys in order to photograph the fishermen at their work. One of the most surprising discoveries I made was how directly these black-and-white images create a continuum with the past. These fishermen proudly display black-and-white photographs of their family’s fishing heritage. Today’s images help them see that they are part of something larger than themselves—part of the great legacy reflected in those early images.
