Photographic Journey:

Providence River

Kevin has been snapping pictures since he was a 16-year-old school boy. Early in his photographic journey Kevin was drawn to the works of Ansel Adams trying to emulate his style and replicate some of his techniques in post processing. This was back when film was developed with chemicals in a traditional darkroom and where exposure, dodging and burning were mostly mechanical processes rather than the computer sliders of our digital darkrooms. Focusing on Adams’s “Zone System” Kevin moved to a 4×5 format camera to more fully explore the nuances of Adam’s work with larger negatives. For those interested in finding out more about the Zone System and Adam’s work the three volume: The Ansel Adams Photography Series, The Camera, The Negative and The Print are an excellent source for the serious photographer. They are available in hardcover and paperback from Amazon and perhaps your local library.

Moving from film to digital has required Kevin to adjust his shooting style and look for more contemporary role models. For that Kevin has turned to the work of well know Rhode Island photographer Richard Benjamin: https://www.richardbenjamin.com/ A review of Kevin’s portfolio certainly shows subtle parallels.

Mallard

Kevin has managed to create a very impressive body of photographic work as a local enthusiast. For those aspiring photographers who are not fortunate enough to be able to travel to exotic photographic destinations it is certainly inspirational to realize that potentially great photographs are all around us.

Favorite Location:

Newport Bridge Super Moon

Kevin is a local photographer not just in location but in where he shoots. Being a small business owner does not give Kevin the ability to travel very far from home. As a result he has been forced, or fortunate enough, to shoot the majority of his work locally. Some of his favorite locations are Providence, Bristol, Pawtuxet Cove and Rodger Williams Park. While his focus has been landscapes and Nature, particularly birds, more recently he has been shooting the Newport Polo Circuit https://www.nptpolo.com/ as one of their official photographers, which gives him unrestricted access to subjects. He just needs to make sure he doesn’t get too close to the action!

Newport Polo

Photographic Style:

Whitetail Deer

A review of Kevin’s work at https://www.kevinmbernard.com/ quickly shows his meticulous attention to detail. Shooting primarily landscape, nature and sports he is fully digital now and shoots with Canon a 5D and 7D. For nature and sports a 100-400mm zoom and a 500mm F4 prime are his go-to lenses. For landscape, it is usually a 21mm prime. Kevin attempts to capture his subjects with a natural feeling. When you look at his images you get the impression you are seeing what he saw, not a “manufactured” view of the subject. There are no fancy gadgets or clever gizmos employed. Kevin uses composition skills along with aperture, shutter speed and sensitivity to yield images that remind you of photographs done back in the film era. No one magic camera setting here, just persistent pursuit of better photographs.

Post Processing:

Pell Bridge Pre-Process

Kevin uses Lightroom© exclusively to manage his portfolio and workflow producing his stunning photographs. His careful approach to photographing carries over to post processing. Describing his approach to post processing as “small incremental changes” rather than a global adjustment approach, Kevin will spend a lot of time “tweaking” an image to achieve the result he is seeking. His past study of Adams’s work and his studious attention to Richard Benjamin’s photographs provides him with a proven approach to creating the best possible image results. Often he will return to an image multiple times over several days to review and adjust his images. The results are images to be proud of. It doesn’t come easily however; Kevin invests a lot of time in learning the ins and outs of Lightroom©. Something he will tell you there is no substitute for.

A few common themes at the Photographic Society of Rhode Island are mentoring & education. All year long our photography “season” is filled with events that we participate in as photographers that are geared towards improving our craft. Presentations, image studies, mentoring nights, competitions, and workshops are all held for the members of the club on a weekly basis. We all see and participate in many of these very events.

[See image gallery at www.psri.us] On Saturday, September 29 I was able to see something a little bit different, and a lot special. As you may or may not know, March of this year marked the 100 year anniversary of Girl Scouts of America. This organization shares PSRI’s themes of mentoring & education, and is aimed at building young girls of courage, confidence and character. The celebration for this milestone was held at Waterfire Providence, and consisted of bridging ceremonies, luminaria processions, torch salutes, food & drink, Girl Scout cookies, and LOTS of the color green everywhere! As part of this 100 year anniversary, the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island embarked on what they called their “Year in the Life of Girl Scouting” photography project. Sixteen girl scouts set out to document the life of a girl scout during the course of a year, and Girl Scouts are a very active and busy bunch of young ladies!

[See image gallery at www.psri.us] Three members of PSRI teamed up with the girl scouts and spent countless hours helping the GSRI make their project a great success. PSRI members Mike Di Stefano, Cemal Ekin, and Dennis Goulet volunteered countless hours teaching in person classes with the girls, as well as providing many online image reviews. Over 700 images were created by the girls and reviewed by Mike, Cemal and Dennis before 80 images were selected for printing by our good friends at Printmakers. Many of these 80 images were on display this past Saturday night as the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island showed off their work to the public under 2 tents on Steeple Street at Waterfire. As I took some photos of the girls photographs I was lucky enough to witness one Girl Scout jumping with excitement and tears in her eyes as she showed her friends and family her photograph. It was being used on a poster used to advertise the event. It was an amazing event to witness, and to know that the members of PSRI had a hand in making this happen is very special indeed.

Thank you very much, and congratulations to Mike, Cemal, and Dennis! Job well done!

A recent article I read somewhere got me thinking about who the photographers are that I admire, and why? What makes their photography enjoyable to me? What draws me in to their images on a regular basis? What is it about their images that causes me want to pick up my camera and shoot?

Top of my list, without a doubt has to be Joe McNally. Simply put, this guys images tell a story, and to me that is what photography is all about – telling a story. Taking an emotion or an event and capturing it in one slice of time. Conveying a feeling. Nobody does it like McNally does. I can look at his images, read his blog articles, and study his books all day long, over and over. Click on the link, check out his work, I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.

I first fell in love with Joe McNally’s photography back in July of 1990. In May of that year, puppeteer Jim Henson passed away, and the July issue of Life Magazine ran Joe’s photo of Kermit the Frog on the cover. That photo touched me in a way that very few photos ever had before, or have since. Never did I imagine that a photograph could convey such a powerful feeling. I still cannot look at that photo without a tear welling up in my eye. Kermit’s pain at the loss of his maker is as visible a part of that image as the directors chair itself.

Do I do the type of photography that Joe does? Nope. Do I WANT to do the type of photography that Joe does? Nope. Well at this point you must be wondering how he inspires me, and it is really simple. I see his images and I feel, and THAT is what I want to do. I want my images to invoke an emotion in my viewers, I want them to look at my image and have the same feeling that I had when I snapped the shutter. That is how Joe inspires me.

So fellow PSRI members, tell me – who inspires you, and why?
