Low cost macro shooting delivering outstanding quality is easier than you think!

Art Vaughan has developed a method for macro photography utilizing the pop-up flash on most camera bodies to provide all the light needed to make stunning close up images.

In this program, photographer Art Vaughan describes a process for shooting macro photographs using lighting provided by the standard ‘pop-up’ flash found on many cameras. Using a simple home-made support bracket and a variety of close-up lenses, extension tubes, or stacked add-on lenses, anyone can produce amazing macro images having true ‘studio’ quality lighting, for a fraction of the cost of a system utilizing multiple flashes, ring lights, or expensive factory made support brackets. The set-up described provides maximum portability for hunting down and following small insects and spiders who aren’t going to sit still for photographers using cumbersome tripods. The program includes details of building your own low cost macro lighting rig. Anyone wishing to explore the world of macro photography and wanting to get top notch and very satisfying results should consider attending.

While every picture tells a story and each one is worth a thousand words, certain photographs tell stories more directly, with more impact and emotion. David H. Wells has spent the last four decades telling stories with his photographs for publications, exhibition and organizations. In this presentation David takes you through his career path, from aspiring photographer to internationally published master photographer. Then David will take you through his photo-essays, where he tells in depth stories through a series of images. David’s photo-essays explore important political topics as well as places that David finds compelling. Photo essays are compelling, dynamic, vivid mission statements of a photographer’s work — every photographer should have a working knowledge of this narrative art form. With that in mind, David will end the presentation sharing resources for photographers interested in pursuing their own photo-essays.

David H. Wells is a freelance photographer/video maker using whatever technology he can to create visual narratives. He is based in Providence, Rhode Island, affiliated with Aurora Photos and is also a photo-educator. One editor described him as a “…specialist in intercultural communication and visual narratives that excel in their creative mastery of light, shadow and sound, stills and video.”
His project on the pesticide poisoning of California farm workers was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Over the years he has worked on assignment for such magazines as Fortune, Life, National Geographic, Newsweek, The Sunday New York Times, Time, etc. He also worked for corporations such as Consolidated Natural Gas and DuPont as well as for non-profits such as the Ford Foundation and the New Israel Fund. He has received two Fulbright fellowships, a grant from Nikon/N.P.P.A., a fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and fellowship from the MacArthur Foundation’s Program of Research and Writing on International Peace and Cooperation.

Roman Kurywczak will be giving his Photographing the Night Sky presentation to PSRI this coming Tuesday, April 2 at 7:30 PM. This presentation is sure to be an eye opener to the possibilities of night time photography, and was a HUGE crowd favorite at NECCC last summer!
