For the third year in a row, PSRI has taken First Place in the annual Multi-screen competition! This year, we tied for first place with Fall River Camera Club. Congratulations to all four clubs, the images were excellent! Kudos to all participants, and a big congratulations to the winners!

The competition runs from May of one year through May of the next. Several local camera clubs participate. This year (2015-16), there were four: Fall River Camera Club, PSRI, Quinebaug Valley Photography Club and Seven Hills Camera Club. The host club this year was Seven Hills Camera Club.

Here’s how the competition works. Each year in May, a predetermined list of 25 categories is presented to participating clubs. This list is gleaned from suggestions made by members of the participating clubs. Shooters can interpret the categories in any way they believe will work for competition purposes, and send their submissions to their respective club representative any time before selection night, usually the following April.

At PSRI, shooters can submit up to 3 images in each category, and can enter as few or as many categories as they like. PSRI’s Multi-screen committee pre-screens all entries for suitability, then projects the selected images at a regular Tuesday night meeting, so club members can vote to choose the final selections that will be submitted to the competition. (Only one image per category can be submitted to the inter-club competition.)

The 2016-17 Multi-screen competition is already underway. Other than your annual club membership fee, there are no additional fees involved. If you would like to participate, use this link for more information and to access the entry form.

Here are the winning images, along with maker’s name and club affiliation.
This is the 7th year of this competition focused on bird photography and was originally titled the Birds In Focus competition. The entry requirements have changed over the years, as well as the prize structure. In 2010, the second year of the competition, my image of the Green Breasted Mango was selected as the Grand Prize winner, and another entry was selected in the top 100 images. I’ve had additional images in the top 100 in 2009 and 2013. Looking at the Top 100 images from 2010 I’m always amazed that my image was selected for the top award.

There are four divisions in which to enter: Professional, Amateur, Fine Art, and Youth. The entry fee is $15 per image so send in only your best.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year is one of the most prestigious competitions featuring the best nature and wildlife images by photographers from around the world. The British Natural History Museum owns and organizes this annual competition and exhibition. This year while in London my wife and I visited the exhibition, which is a spectacular display of the winning images of the 2015 competition. You can view the winning images here.

The WPY is now open for entries until 25 February 2016. The competition is run in two stages; the initial entries are in high quality jpg format with 1920 pixels on the longest side. If an image is shortlisted after the first round of judging, the original camera files and high resolution edited files will be requested for final judging. There are 16 categories covering just about every aspect of nature photography so you may have something unique to enter. Remember, this is a very competitive competition so only send your best and most unique images.
