On September 15, 2015, PSRI’s first speaker of the season, Jürgen Lobert of nearby Massachusetts, will present “Intro to Night Photography”. He will show us how to create urban nightscapes, hauntingly beautiful views of captured time and deepened colors. Night photography transforms the familiar and can create exciting cityscapes, revealing beauty in the mundane. Night images relay a profound serenity by capturing time, where clouds and cars become streaks, water ripples smooth over and stars form trails in the sky. Urban night photos require the photographer to balance highlights of a multitude of sources, which becomes a rewarding challenge needing different approaches compared to naturally moonlit scenes. Jürgen will show many examples of waterfront images, motion, different vantage points and, yes, even urban star trails! The presentation will also touch on equipment, basic camera settings, white balance, sources of light and how to process the outcome.
TWO WORKSHOPS SCHEDULED
Participants of the workshop will be visiting a less popular, but very interesting part of Providence, the Mile End Cove on Providence River. This place has some unique views, beautiful reflections and the opportunity to make the mundane and industrial look appealing at night. The challenge of balancing highlights while practicing long exposures is ideal and for interested parties, the evening can conclude in another location in India Point Park.
A follow-on digital workshop will be available for those who attended one of the field workshops. Digital processing techniques will be covered to get the most out of your nighttime images.
