Our president Christina Richardson has received a significant recognition from Kodak. Her image (on the left) recently received recognition by Kodak and will be part of an exhibit taking place on Kodak’s outdoor video display in Time Square New York! The exhibit runs from around Christmas to mid-January! She says “I can’t believe my name is actually going to be displayed in Time Square! Thank you for the nomination Printmakers!”. We say, Congratulations Christina, well deserved!!

Wanted! Images for the MultiScreen Competition!

PSRI will be holding the MultiScreen Preselction Night on March 22nd 2011. In order to keep with the tradition of digital images being accepted up until midnight prior to a competition, Images for this preselection night will be accepted up until midnight on Sunday, March 20th.

Images must be submitted by March 20th

Images must have been taken after May 1st 2010.
Digital images should be submitted to multiscreen@psri.us

Sizing Files:

Images should be no larger than 1024×768 @ 72 resolution. The maximum width of an image is 1024 pixels and the maximum height of an image is 768 pixels.

Naming Files:

Naming files requires the subject’s number (found below), the subject’s name, the club’s name, and your name (last name first)
Example: 10_funny_psri_richardson christina
You may enter up to three images per subject. If you are entering more than one image per subject then you must identify your individual images within a subject with a 1, 2, or 3:
10_01_funny_psri_richardson_christina
10_02_funny_psri_richardson_christina
10_03_funny_psri_richardson_christina
A couple of the subject names may be too long to fit in the file name. Please use the provided shortened version of the name found in parentheses after the subject name. For example, a file name for Field of Dreams should look like this:

Audubon Magazine 2010 Grand Prize Winner Dennis Goulet

It is finally announced! I have been waiting to break this news for almost two months now. Dennis received the news on the phone a couple of months ago at our house. The grand prize winning image will appear in the January-February 2011 issue of the magazine.

In addition to winning the grand prize, Dennis managed to get another image in the top 100, Bee Chasing Hummingbird which may be familiar to many of you.

Hunt’s Show Deals

I was at Hunt’s Melrose store today, my first trip there. It was jammed with people who all seemed to have a grand time. After making my presentation I wondered around a little and visited a few booths. Many interesting products, samples, reps, …

They were running very strong sales, but I have just received a new e-mail with better deals yet. In case you do not get their e-mail newsletters, I thought I would share the e-flyer with you. The discounts I see on it are better than what people told me there today. For instance, there was a 10% discount I believe on ColorMunki on the floor, now I see $65 discount. On X-Rite ColorChecker Passport they were offering 10% or $10 I am not sure, but in the flyer the discount is $18. There are other goodies to test-drool over too!

John Paul Caponigro Presentation

Yesterday evening we had a great presentation by one of the cerebral photographers working today. John Paul shared with us his approach to creativity, including writing, doodling, playing, and other tools. On his site he shares a wealth of information with anyone who cares to visit and subscribe to his newsletter. I have been a subscriber and very frequent visitor of JP’s site and in fact shared with our members a couple of techniques I learned from him on some of my presentations. I encourage you all to visit the site and subscribe to the newsletter. You will receive a user ID and password that will give you access to his extensive library.

I also encourage you to try some of the tools John Paul explained last night. They may or may not be your cup of tea, but what do you have to lose? Experimentation has been a core idea in photography since its beginnings and we now have tools that make experimenting much easier, with instant feedback, and practically at no cost. Try it, you may like it.

A Special Waterfire Event

The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation is having a special weekend of events on October 8-9, 2010. In addition to the typical WaterFire unique events are planned. Read the details on the foundation Web site. Any members who go to these events may consider sharing some of their photographs with the foundation. Although they have many snaps, they need high quality images for various purposes. They cannot pay a fee but full photo credit is promised.

Sky viewers might get to enjoy some spectacular Northern Lights, or aurorae, tomorrow. After a long slumber, the Sun is waking up. Early Sunday morning, the Sun’s surface erupted and blasted tons of plasma (ionized atoms) into interplanetary space. That plasma is headed our way, and when it arrives, it could create a spectacular light show.

“This eruption is directed right at us, and is expected to get here early in the day on August 4th,” said astronomer Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). “It’s the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time.”

The eruption, called a coronal mass ejection, was caught on camera by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) – a spacecraft that launched in February. SDO provides better-than-HD quality views of the Sun at a variety of wavelengths.
