The PSReye Focus magazine, featuring the photographs and articles of PSRI members and Providence College photography students is available for purchase. It is the result of the hard work of two Providence College students, Emma Hansen and John Vaghi with contributions from many photographers and the keen and critical eye of the editorial board of the magazine. It is published on an on-demand printing platform and anyone can purchase as many copies as they want. The photographic contributions are great so is the print and paper quality. It should make an excellent Christmas gift or stocking stuffer for the photo buff and art lovers.

Order it directly from MagCloud. The holiday price until January 1, 2010 is $12.50 plus shipping. After that the price will go up to $15.00 plus shipping. Shipping charges depend on the delivery speed, the lowest cost option at $1.40 per magazine arrives within about one week. MagCloud accepts PayPal or credit card payments and you will receive your copy in your mailbox within about one week although they indicate 1-2 weeks.

We hope that you enjoy the magazine, which is most likely a camera club first.

Through Four Pairs of Eyes

The Newport Arts Museum presents “Focus on Four,” an exhibit of four American photographers who worked in Rhode Island at different times between 1899 and the 1970s. The show highlights the photographers’ varying approaches to the medium. During the summers of 1899 and 1903, Gertrude Käsebier (1852-1934) spent the season in a rural part of Newport. Her photographs contributed to her recognition as the most important woman of the pictorialist movement. Lewis Hine (1874-1940) worked in Rhode Island briefly in 1909 and in 1912 with the National Child Labor Committee and the Consumers’ League of Rhode Island. He photographed child labor as well as the conditions in New England textile mills. Charlotte Estey’s three-part series for the Providence Journal’s Rhode Islander about the South Main Street community offers a window into the Providence of 1952. Aaron Siskind, an abstract photographer, came to Rhode Island School of Design in 1971 and secured his position as one of the 20th-century’s most influential photographers.
LOCATION: Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Ave., Newport. Friday, Oct. 30, 5 to 7 p.m. reception. Show continues through Janurary 18. $10 nonmembers; free for members; to register for the reception, call (401) 848-8200, ext. 109.

Received the following announcement from Jessica Wilson. A visit to the photographer’s website will show you the promise of a full print exhibit. Looks very interesting, well worth the effort the drive to see the exhibit.

A Photograph from The Exhibit

Photographer Mark Starr of (see his web site) will show photos of the Point Judith Fishing Community atthe South Kingstown Public Library/Peace Dale, 1057 Kingstown Rd., Peace Dale RI 02879 on Thursday, May 14, at 7 PM.

For more information: 789-1555
For directions: www.skpl.org

Mark Starr received a B.A. from Wesleyan University, in Middletown, Ct. He exhibits work and has won numerous prizes at the Mystic Arts Center, the Slater Memorial Museum and the Norwich Center for the Arts, and a portfolio of his work has appeared in the fine-art black and white magazine Lenswork. He is a selected artist at the Mystic Arts Center, as well as a member of the Artist’s Cooperative Gallery and the American Child Photographers Charity Guild.

He says of this presentation:

Having spent years in a museum environment documenting the area’s rich whaling and fishing history, I soon realized how important it was to record this industry before it, too, disappears. Over the past year I have had the privilege of accompanying many of the vessels on their journeys in order to photograph the fishermen at their work. One of the most surprising discoveries I made was how directly these black-and-white images create a continuum with the past. These fishermen proudly display black-and-white photographs of their family’s fishing heritage. Today’s images help them see that they are part of something larger than themselves—part of the great legacy reflected in those early images.
