The 2012 Windland Smith Rice International Awards are now open for entries. The entry period ends 7 May 2012.

This is one of the two or three high profile competitions for nature photography. It is a multi-level entry systetm which makes it easier to enter than in the past when high resolution files including RAW files were required to enter. Now all that is needed for entry is a JPG file not exceeding 500K and entry is completed online. Images that make it into the next round will require the larger files, complete description and equipment details be provided.

The rules are simple: All photos must accurately reflect the subject matter as it appeared in the viewfinder. Nothing should be added to an image, and aside from dust spots, nothing should be taken away. Normal processing of RAW image files and minor adjustments to color and contrast are acceptable, as is minimal cropping. HDR and focus stacking are permitted as long as all manipulation is disclosed upon entry.

Greater Lynn International Reminder

I have the pleasure of announcing another member achievement. One of Steve Tierney’s photographs, Cedar Waxwings, was placed among the top 250 in 2011 “Share the View” International Nature Photography juried competition. By the admission of the announcement Steve received, “the competition was fierce and placing in the top 250 is quite an achievement.” Congratulations Steve. Although you can see the photograph here, you may want to see it in context on the competition site. The photographs are listed alphabetically by photographers’ last name.

MagCloud Contest Result

As the followers of this site probably know, I had submitted my publication “The Hagia Sophia Experience” to a contest run by MagCloud on facebook. I thank all the supporters for their votes and dedication to visit the competition site every day to cast another vote. The results are in and The Hagia Sophia Experience is a runner up. I had heard from MagCloud about the competition results but wanted to wait until they announced the results on their site.

My sincere appreciation for all the support I have received and my congratulations to the winners of the contest.

Juried Exhibition

Plymouth Center for the Arts invites entries to “The Fine Art of Photography, 2^nd Annual Juried Photography Exhibition.” The submissions will be accepted between February 1-29, 2012 and the winners will be announced on March 16, 2012. The accepted submissions must be delivered professionally framed and ready to hang by March 25-26, 2012. See the details on their Web site. This is a good opportunity to be included in an exhibition. Opening reception on April 1, 2012.

One of the most, if not THE most, prestigious nature photography competitions, the Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2012 competition, is now open for entries. Closing date for entries is 23 February 2012. In addition to 11 categories (including B&W and creative visions) special awards include the Eric Hosking Portfolio Award for a young wildlife photographer 18-26 years old, the Gerald Durrell Award for Endangered Species, the World in Our Hands, and the Wildlife Photojournalist Award for a series of six images telling a story.

Portfolio Publishing in LensWork

I am very pleased to inform my friends at PSRI that my Infrared Earthscapes portfolio has been accepted for inclusion in the LensWork Extended Edition. Being a digital edition, the Extended Edition removes the limitations of printed magazines. As some of you may know, LensWork publishes only B&W photographs using extremely high printing quality. In the Extended Edition, they can accommodate more photographs and also audio interviews. My portfolio of 81 photographs will be in the November-December 2011 issue which should be coming out in a few weeks. You can see the issue preview page which lists my collection with 81 photographs.

One of the magazines I published using MagCloud, Hagia Sophia Experience is in a contest sponsored by the printing company. The contest is held on facebook and the winner will be determined by facebook member votes. Each facebook member can vote once every day until December 17, 2011 when the contest voting will close. A Contest at the Chateau

I received the following information from Bonnie Palmer of Chateau Charmant about a contest they are holding. It has a short deadline if anyone might be interested, read the text carefully.

This contest is so simple, that is probably why the rules were missed. It’s photos of our area, so if anyone is planning a trip to the Ozarks it would be a fun day to visit a magical castle built almost entierly by 3 people. There are age brackets for prizes. They are aon the site, but 5 to 11 costs $10, entry fee box lunch included; 12 to 17 cost $15; college students cost$15 and adults costs$20; Pros at$50. per person. It is photographs of the castle or the surrounding area of Olga, the 100 year old Kindal grocery store, the tree arched drive down to the castle, the arched bridge spaning the dry riverbed, etc. The following week the photos are due back on Sept 22 to be judged and displayed. All entries must be framed (any size, this year) with the name of the photographer and their age attached, also if they are a pro or an amateur taped to the bottom so it can be folded back. They will be judged and awarded ribbons as well as prizes for the grand prize winner in each of the age categories. The grand prize winners (for each age category) will have their work displayed at the castle for the next year, plus be featured in the castle Guardian Newletter.

That’s it. Simple.

It will be a fun day. Gates open at 6 AM for those who want to catch the castle in the dark and get a sunrise. The box lunch is prepared by Chef Roland Parny a wonderful French caterer. Hope you can make a fun day with us at the castle.
