Clay Blackmore
How to Photograph Everyone

Fun and engaging, Blackmore has created a new program for those who wish to learn how to create great portraits of everyone.

Consistent results are at the heart of this new program with an emphasis on posting, lighting, composition, and expression. Working outdoors or in the studio Blackmore will show you how to harness the light and create beautiful images of men, women, children, families, brides, individuals, couples, and groups.

“Confidence is the key”, explains Blackmore. “I can help anyone gain a better understanding of what people like and don’t like in their portraits. We simply concentrate on a few simple thoughts each time we get behind our camera. Once we have the techniques memorized our hands can form unbreakable patterns allowing us to work from the heart.”

Blackmore is one of the most passionate photographers working in the country today. One of Canon’s Explorers of Light and a member of the elite Cameracraftsmen group, his love for this industry is evident in every image he creates and his lectures have been embraced worldwide.

During one of my presentations at NECCC last weekend I expressed my view that Ansel Adams never made realistic photographs. Every photograph he took never ended at the point of releasing the shutter, never. He exposed for a particular vision, then developed the negative in different developers, sometimes in multiple developers with water baths in between. Then in the printing stage he exercised utmost control to produce the print that he had in mind. Then I added “if manipulation was OK for Adams, why is it not OK for digital photographers?” I think the answer lies in the accessibility of the tools for control. In the old days only the most skilled, master craftsman, the most patient could either do it in the darkroom or those who could afford hire the skilled people to do it for them. Today, the tools are well within the reach of everyone interested. That is the good part, but there is the rub; not all are skilled enough to produce the desired results and the technique becomes too visible, and it comes to the forefront.

I stumbled upon an interview with Adams just a few minutes ago where he clearly states that his pictures are not meant to be realistic and always had manipulation. Later in the interview he also talks about the then future electronic imaging. It is worth viewing and contemplating.

(You can see my presentation notes on my site, read from bottom up.)

MagCloud, the printer of the PSReye Focus Magazine is running very limited time sales with 50% off the production cost. The next one will start in less than 15 minutes and will run for 2 hours. To be exact, the 50% off sale will be between 7 am – 9 am Pacific time (10 am – 12 pm Eastern time) on July 20, 2010. The magazine is now available with perfect binding rather than saddle stitched; it will look more like Popular Photography or other magazines that has a spine. If you were waiting for a sale to get your copy, this is the time. I understand that after this sale there may be (may be) other 2-hour sale periods. If you miss this one just visit MagCloud.com and see if there is another one coming. I believe today is the last day of the sale.

Visit PSReye Focus Magazine to view and to purchase on sale. Regular price $16, on sale under $10.

I am pleased to announce that PSRI has a new membership registration and dues payment system. With this system in place, we will be able to give every member a login ID to the Web site and provide information accessible only by dues paying PSRI members. It is a straight forward process and you will find the details under the Membership menu option. Here is the summary:

The firs step is “Registration” without which you will not be able to login to see the dues payment page

The second step is to login

The third step (optional but we would very much like you to do it) is to update your profile

The fourth step is to visit the “Pay Dues” page which is only visible after logging in to the site

There, you can purchase the type of membership you want

For family membership, both members may register but only one needs to pay. We will manually adjust the second member’s record to give full access to the site

Memberships are valid for one year FROM THE DATE OF PAYMENT

There may be small snags, difficulties, or error messages. Please review the process and make sure you are following it accurately. Write to me if you need help.
