A New Magazine …

… and, it is free! Published by the Nielsen Photo Group (publishers of PDN and Rangefinder) has introduced PIX, The Photographer’s Field Guide, and online magazine. The premier issue is available for viewing and for the time being it is free. There is plenty of gear information along with some interesting photography. Take a look at it, the price is right.

Discount on Photographs and Related Products

As many of you know, I am retiring very soon. To celebrate my retirement, I am offering a healthy discount to PSRI members on products offered at Kept Light Photography with already surprisingly affordable prices. The discount applies to all the products offered in the store, from the limited edition folios to 2012 calendars through the rest of 2011. Some items have shipping charges added, if you order those with shipping charges but take delivery in person I will reimburse the shipping charges. Do not apply the discount code until you are ready to check out. Once the discount code is entered, that shopping cart is locked. Any new items added or quantity changed will result in emptying the cart requiring to start over. Find the discount code on the members only page for this purpose.

Be Inspired

Judy Malloch, National Wildlife Magazine First Place, Amateur

We’ve spent much of the last five weeks learning about nature photography and how to make better nature images.  Here are the winning images of two prestigious nature photography competitions which should offer inspiration.  Don’t be discouraged by a thought that ‘I’ll never take great images like that’.  These images will give you a notion of the quality of work that is chosen, that way when you are standing in from of something truly spectacular, you’ll know not only  to capture the image, but to enter the competition.

The new body combines the best of 1D and 1Ds with an 18.1 MP newly designed sensor, a blistering 14 frames per second shooting, dual DIGIC-5 processors, 252-zone metering, and a stupefying ISO setting of 204,800. It also supports a network connection but the wireless connectivity and GPS geotagging will require optional accessories. Read more about it on the Canon site.

A twitter contest

You will remember our friend in Boston, Lou Jones, who visited PSRI a couple of years ago and made a very interesting presentation on using speedlights (or speedlites). He is running a contest with a chance to win good prizes. They range from Lowe Pro bags to copies of his books. It is easy to participate if you have a twitter account. See the details on Lou’s blog and support your local photographer. I have just done it, easy as pie …
