Lightroom 4

Lightroom 4 Quick ReviewIf you are a Lightroom user, you probably have heard that version 4 is out. I have written a post that looks at the salient features of the new product. It is not a full review, nor is it a “how to” post. But it may help you look at the right places to find the important features.

Visual Perception and Lighting

Sponsored by Canon

Tuesday, March 27, 7:30 P.M.

Our final presentation for March will be very special night of learning. We are very lucky to have as our speaker, from New York, Jack Reznicki a Canon explorer of Light, who is being sponsored by Canon. Jack states in his program description: “all photos are about light and lighting. Available light, strobe light, ambient light, studio light, it’s all about being able to see, understand and control light. Some days the lighting gods smile upon you and kiss your photos with a glorious light and some days the lighting gods frown and you end up babbling in a corner, mumbling to yourself. “

An internationally popular lecturer, Jack Reznicki is always very informative, insightful, entertainingly outspoken, and refreshingly candid. Jack will discuss in this far reaching session, his commercial and personal work and how they interact. He will also discuss light, how to see it, and how to handle it for better, more dramatic images. “Lighting Essentials” as Jack calls it for both natural and artificial light. Topics such as the quality and quantity of light, size and position of light, including the sun and strobes, why shooting before and after “Golden Hour” is so special, and how just moving your feet can drastically change the light.

Visual perception and how we look at photographs has also been a popular segment in his talks. Composition and how to use these concepts in your photos will help you with any type of photography. Jack will show there is more to understand than just the ever-popular rule of thirds.

Our speaker, Jack Reznicki is an internationally renowned commercial people and children photographer based in New York City. His creative problem solving has helped promote products and services for many companies such as Toys “R” Us, Tylenol, The Wall Street Journal, Hyatt, Reader’s Digest, AT&T, and several Time Magazine covers. He is the author of several books on commercial photography including “Photographer’s Survival Guide”, which deals with copyright and legal issues for photographers and “Studio and Commercial Photography- A Kodak Pro Workshop” book and other books. Along with many other awards, Jack was very proud to twice receive the IPC (International Photographic Council) Leadership medal for “Excellence in Studio Photography” at the United Nations. Jack was appointed a guest professor at Shandong University of Art and Design in Jinan, China and named a Mo-Tse Grand Master Photographer in China. He is also honored to be named an Honorary Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography. He proudly served as the President of Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and named an Honorary Master Photographer. He was President of NY chapter of Advertising Photographers of America (APA), and sat on the NY board of American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP). His leadership skills have been lauded and awarded both here in the US and abroad.

On the Faculty at the School of Visual Arts in New York City Jack teaches a graduate level course on the business of photography. You can also find Jack as one of the Dream Team Instructors at the Photoshop World Conventions.

Jack is one of the original  “Canon Explorers of Light”, an “Epson Stylus Pro”, host of the Epson Print Academy’s Track One, an X-Rite Coloratti, and a Sandisk “Photo Master”. Jack has also done Beta testing and consulting with Canon, Epson, Mamiya, Microsoft, X-Rite, Leaf digital backs, onOne Software, and Adobe.

Multiple Image Composites, Part 2

Yesterday, I posted an tutorial explaining how to create multiple image composites using Photoshop. In that post, I promised to have the second part to show how we can capture multiple images on a single frame using Canon gear (not “gear”). My second post now explains this process in reasonable detail.Long shutter speed, multiple stroboscopic images

Multiple Image Composites

Last Tuesday our guest speaker Andre Gallant presented several different techniques for capturing movement and passage of time (my terms). One technique that captured multiple images on one frame was available on Nikon cameras. Two pieces of information may be of interest to Canon users, one probably no cost, the other at $3,500.

The first piece of information is that I have a new post on my site that explains how you can produce multiple image composites with any camera using Photoshop (quite possibly Photoshop Elements as well). Read it and follow the simple instructions, even Andre could follow them! The second piece of information is that the new Canon 5D Mark-III can do multiple image captures on one frame in camera with several options. That will set you back about $3,500! Take your pick, my way or the bank way. I will also post another tutorial that will explain how you can capture multiple images on one frame using Canon gear.

Fair warning, I do not take “painterly” as a compliment. I am proud to be a photographer and do not have brush-envy!

Good Source of Reading

I have accidentally stumbled upon a rich source of photographic resource online, and more about how I got there in a later post. While previewing a book online, I noticed a list of related content being displayed on the side and followed one. I arrived at a Web site called issuu.com (read it as issue, leave it to the Internet!) I started looking around, did a few quick searches and found that there are a large number of photographic books, magazines, portfolios, etc. at least for viewing online and many being available to download. Let me give you a few quick links, but also suggest that you type in your search phrase, photographer or author name, subject, and find out what else is available. Fair warning though, it may become a time sink!

and the list goes on. You will be surprised at the variety of subjects and the quality of available resources. Give it a try. Share your finds and comments here with others if you like.

Andre Gallant, ANEC

Tuesday, February 28, 7:30 PM

This presentation is one you do not want to miss.

Professional photographer and author Andre Gallant will be traveling down from New Brunswick, Canada to judge the Greater Lynn International Exhibition and has graciously agreed to stay over to do a presentations for us on “Expressive Photography”.  Andre describes his program as an exploration into various expressive photography techniques such as Dreamscapes, Multiple Exposures, Panning and Montages which is the combination of 2 or more photographs. André will show some of his work and describe in detail how the images were created in camera, followed by a brief Photoshop demonstration. Andre states ”With my personal photography, like the expressionists, I’m less concerned about showing a representation of the subject matter, but would rather like to convey my feelings towards the subject matter, or unleash an emotion onto my canvases. I want the viewer to feel the photographs rather than view them”.

Our speaker is a freelance photographer who travels the world over, taking expressive, creative photographs.  A regular contributor to Photo Life magazine, his work has appeared in numerous magazines such as Outdoor Photographer, Canadian Camera, Canadian Living, En Route, etc. and he has been the recipient of two National Magazine Awards for his photography. He is also the author of numerous publications including the books “Expressionism: Digital Dreamscapes and other Techniques”, “Destinations: A Photographer’s Journey”, “Dreamscapes: Exploring Photo Montages”, and “Photographing People at Home and Around the World”.  Andre teaches photography workshops with Freeman Patterson with whom he co-wrote “Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image”, as well as, the revised edition of “Photography for the Joy of It”.  He lectures internationally, throughout Canada, and the US.

Andre will have a selection of his books available for purchase the night of his presentation, and will be happy to autograph them for you. Please bring checks or cash. The prices range from $25 to $50. He refers to his latest book “Expressionism”, as the recipe book for Expressive Images.

To see more of his work, his web site can be viewed at www.andregallant.com

You will not want to miss this special presentation from one of the most creative photographers in North America.
